I always begin an interior design project by selecting the light fixture for the dining room–especially in a condominium unit, since it’s the first thing you see when you walk in. I can’t even choose the furniture without deciding on this first.
Choosing a light fixture or feature light is like choosing your jewelry for your outfit–it can either enhance or destroy your OOTD.
The light fixture, be it a chandelier or a pendant light, can readily create a statement and pull your whole interior look together. Sometimes, I would even rather spend on the light fixture than the furniture.
I myself had to go through three weeks of searching for “the right one” for my new apartment. And trust me, three weeks is a very long time for me to decide on any interior detail or decor.

Consider ceiling height
When deciding on a fixture, consider the height of the ceiling. The fixture should dangle above the heads of everyone seated. Sometimes though, for drama, the tip of the chandelier would skim right above the head of a person, but I would reserve this scale for a commercial interior space.
Ensure proportion
Consider the whole space and size of table. The light fixture should be proportionate to the furniture and to the size of the room.
The light fixture should illuminate the table and not the heads of the people sitting. The light should be warm and non-glaring. It should be pleasant and not painful to look at–literally and figuratively.

To create a statement, the light fixture should create an impact from all angles. Whatever impact you prefer, I leave it up to you.
In my book, the light fixture should be of good quality, come with a warranty, and be easy to access. I prefer to buy from distributors who have their own servicing team.
Lastly, you have to fall in love with your light fixture. I always treat it like a piece of art that I always fall in love with, be it for my client or for myself.
